Quick answer. The gold price per pound today is $60,808 in US dollars, for pure (24-karat) gold, as of September 29, 2026. Gold Price Per Pound by Karat
Most gold that people weigh at home isn't pure. Jewelry, class rings, dental gold and older coins are alloys, and their value per pound depends on how much of the weight is actually gold. Karat measures that in 24ths:
| Karat | Gold content | Price per pound today |
|---|---|---|
| 24k | 99.9%+ | $60,808 |
| 22k (Eagle, Krugerrand, much Indian and Middle Eastern jewelry) | 91.67% | $55,741 |
| 18k | 75.0% | $45,606 |
| 14k (most US jewelry) | 58.3% | $35,471 |
| 10k | 41.7% | $25,337 |
These are melt values: what the gold inside the item is worth at spot. They're a ceiling for sellers and a floor for buyers. Our 14k gold price per pound page goes through each karat in detail, including how to read the hallmarks.
The Past Year, in Dollars per Pound
Gold's price per pound swings by thousands of dollars over a year, because every $1 move in the ounce price is a $14.58 move in the pound price. Over the past 52 weeks, COMEX gold futures have ranged from $55,717 to $81,465 per pound. The highest futures close on record is $5,318.40 an ounce, or $77,560 a pound, set in January 2026; the latest futures close is 20.9% below it. The live chart on our homepage shows every range from one month to the full history.
How the Per-Pound Price Is Calculated
Nobody trades gold "per pound" on an exchange. The global market quotes one price, US dollars per troy ounce, and every other unit is converted from it. The conversion to pounds takes two exact definitions:
- One avoirdupois pound is 453.59237 grams, fixed by international agreement in 1959.
- One troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams.
Dividing the first by the second gives 14.5833 troy ounces per pound (exactly 175/12). So:
price per pound = spot price per troy ounce × 14.5833
At today's spot of $4,169.70, that's $60,808. Because the multiplier is fixed, the per-pound price rises and falls by exactly the same percentage as the ounce price. If gold is up 1% today, so is a pound of it.
We take spot from gold-api.com and rebuild this page every 6 hours, stamping the time of each figure. The headline price also re-checks itself in your browser while the page is open. The per-weight and karat tables are exact multiples of the same spot figure, never separately sourced numbers that could drift apart.
Why Other Sites Show a Different Per-Pound Price
If you compare three gold sites you may see three different per-pound figures. There are four common reasons, and only one of them is a real difference in the market.
- Timing. Gold moves all day. A page stamped an hour earlier can be a few hundred dollars away per pound on a busy day. Always check the timestamp.
- Spot vs futures. Some sites convert the front-month COMEX futures price instead of spot. Futures normally sit slightly above spot; today the gap is +$35.10 an ounce, which is about $512 per pound.
- The ×16 error. A site that multiplies by 16 shows a "pound" price of $66,715, about $5,907 too high, because it has counted everyday ounces instead of troy ounces. Our guide to how many ounces are in a pound of gold explains the two systems.
- Pounds sterling. Search results for "gold price per pound" often include UK pages quoting gold per ounce in British pounds. That's a currency, not a weight, and the figures aren't comparable to this page.
Price per Pound vs What You'll Pay
The figures on this page are the value of the gold alone. Buying adds a premium: about 1–2% on kilo bars and up to about 3–6% on American Gold Eagles in normal markets, according to 2026 dealer guides. On a pound, each percentage point is roughly $608. Selling works the other way: refiners, dealers and jewelers pay a share of melt, not the full figure.

Worked Examples
A half-pound of gold coins. Seven 1 oz Gold Buffalos contain 7 troy ounces, slightly less than half a pound (7.29 ozt). At spot they're worth $29,188; a full half-pound of pure gold is $30,404.
Converting a kilo price. A kilo is 2.2046 pounds, so a kilo of gold at spot is $134,059, and a pound is that divided by 2.2046: $60,808.
Checking a "per pound" figure you've seen. Divide it by 14.583 to get the implied ounce price. If that's about 10% above today's spot, the figure was calculated with 16 ounces.
