Quick answer. A premium is what you pay above the value of the gold itself. Subtract melt value (gold content × spot) from the price you're quoted; divide the difference by the gold content for a premium per ounce, or by the melt value for a percentage. Today's spot is $4,169.70 per troy ounce, or $60,808 per pound. Choose a product above, enter a dealer's price and quantity, and the calculator does the rest, including the premium on a pound's worth.
How the Calculation Works
For any gold coin or bar:
Melt value = gold per item (troy oz) × quantity × spot Premium ($) = total price − melt value Premium per troy oz = premium ÷ total gold (troy oz) Premium per pound = premium per troy oz × 14.5833 Premium % = premium ÷ melt value
The presets use each product's gold content, not its total weight. That matters for 22-karat coins: an American Gold Eagle weighs 33.93 grams but contains exactly one troy ounce of gold, and the Krugerrand is the same. Buffalos and Maple Leafs are .9999 fine and weigh almost exactly one troy ounce.
Worked Example: Fifteen Eagles
Say a dealer quotes you $65,673 for fifteen 1 oz American Gold Eagles, roughly a pound of gold:
- Melt value: 15 troy oz × $4,169.70 = $62,546
- Premium: $3,127 in total
- Per troy ounce: $208.49
- Per pound of gold: $3,040
- As a percentage: 5.0% over spot
A 5% premium on Eagles is inside the typical 3–6% range, so this quote is ordinary, not a bargain and not a rip-off. The same fifteen ounces bought as a 10 oz bar plus five 1 oz bars, at a blended premium of about 2%, would cost three percentage points less: a saving of about $1,876 on the order.
Premium per Pound, by Format
Premiums are easiest to compare as percentages, but on a pound of gold it helps to see the dollars. Each percentage point on a pound is $608 at today's price.
| Format | Typical premium | Premium on a pound's worth today |
|---|---|---|
| 1 kilo bar | about 1–2% | $608–$1,216 |
| 10 oz bar | about 1–3% | $608–$1,824 |
| 1 oz bars, Krugerrands | about 2–4% | $1,216–$2,432 |
| Maple Leaf | about 3–5% | $1,824–$3,040 |
| American Gold Eagle | about 3–6% | $1,824–$3,648 |
Two patterns explain almost all of the differences:
- Bigger pieces, smaller premiums. Making, packaging and shipping a bar costs roughly the same whatever its size, so the cost per ounce falls as bars grow. Fractional coins sit at the other extreme.
- Government coins cost a little more. Eagles, Maple Leafs and Buffalos carry a government's guarantee of weight and purity and are recognized by every buyer, which is worth something when you sell.
When a Low Premium Is a Red Flag, and When a High One Is
Too low. A price at or below spot on new product usually means a one-off promotion, a secondary-market item, a minimum order, or a payment method that adds a surcharge at checkout. Very rarely it means a fake. Check the all-in cart total and buy from established dealers.
Too high. 2026 dealer guides treat premiums of around 10% or more on standard 1 oz gold coins, or around 6% or more on gold bars, as a warning sign in normal markets. There can be a legitimate reason: a proof or limited-mintage version, a graded collector coin, or a genuine supply squeeze. If the seller can't name the reason, you're overpaying. When a bullion conversation turns to "rare" or "semi-numismatic" coins, ask for the premium per ounce in writing and put it through this calculator.
Check the spot price too. A premium is only meaningful against the real spot price. If a dealer's "spot" is higher than the independent figure at the top of this page, the true premium is higher than the one they quote.
What the Calculator Doesn't Include
- Payment surcharges. Card payments often cost 2–4% more than a bank wire or check. Enter the price for the payment method you'll actually use.
- Shipping and insurance. Add them to the price paid if they're charged separately.
- Sales tax. Some states tax bullion purchases, some exempt them, and some exempt only above a threshold. Add any tax to the price.
- The sell-back price. Ask what the dealer would pay you for the same product today. The gap between their buy and sell prices is your real round-trip cost.
